This adventure is way far from the ordinary as you’ll combine a train journey plus added hike. Rising up early, you’ll depart Cusco with the Guide in private transport to the ancient Ollantaytambo in time to board one of the wagons of the Expedition train. Taking around 1.30 hours, this ride ensures spectacular scenery alongside the Vilcanota River until the drop-off location of Km 104. Here a wood bridge will mark the beginning of the trail, crossing over the Urubamba River you’ll follow a quick check-in along with a brief instruction on the route ahead.
The first site on the list is Chachabamba, which remained hidden until its discovery in 1940. The fun fact of this place is that it means “the place of bitting mosquitoes”, at least one of the many fun theories often heard. From this point, the hike turns a bit harder but is rewarded by the verdant forests that overlook the valley, and the eye-catching beautiful Orchids found along the way.
After a 3-hour uphill walk, the Wiñaywayna site raises in an impressive mountain slope, which terraces blend harmoniously with the mountains. Forever young! that’s the meaning of this place that will stir your curiosity for Inca History all day. You’ll have a break close by to enjoy lunch at an open spot with incomparable views.
Following the original Inca path, the last stretch is to The Sun Gate or Inti Punku. This is the spot from where everyone drops their jaws with the majestic views over Machu Picchu. The hike continues this time to the Citadel for up-to-date historical records and insights from the Guide. Along with all theories, you’ll have a tour around the most important corners featuring the famous 3 windows Temple, the Condor temple, including a visit to the Guardian House for legendary photos taken with the backdrop of Huayna Picchu. To end, you’ll follow a 30-min return ride to the town of Aguas Calientes taking the outbound train journey, this time to Ollantaytambo or Poroy leaving behind the magical atmosphere of Machu Picchu. Meet and assist by a Peru&U member at the station and transfer back to the hotel in Cusco.
